Charles "Red" B. Smith

Charles “Red” B. Smith, 88 of Ashville, OH passed away at home on Monday, February 19, 2024.  He was born on August 27, 1935 to the late Charles Henry and Rosa Tama (Vincent) Smith in Ringgold, Pickaway County, OH.  Red had attended Walnut School and owned a painting and carpentry business, Rapid Red’s Painting.  He was a member of Emmanual UMC in Circleville and the Pickaway County Senior Center.  Red made sausage using the family recipe selling locally and was also known for making cracklins the old-fashioned way outside over an open fire using an iron kettle. He dressed and played Santa for parties and churches for at least 40 years once his father-in-law handed him the jingle bells.  He loved woodworking and building special things for family like cradles, toy boxes and sleighs. 

Also preceded in death by his wife Carole Taylor-Smith; daughter Mary Lou Hill and her husband Shaun Hill.

Survived by his children Brenda Smith (Mary Nance) of Circleville, Marilyn Smith Gleason of McArthur, Timothy Smith of Ashville and Matthew (Nicole) Smith of Winter Garden, FL; niece Rhonda “Rooter” Guess; grandchildren, Tammi Sue (Chad) Blount, Timi Louise Smith, Tiffani Dyan Smith, Amanda Nicole Smith (Eric Hughey), Hamilton Stone (Madi) Hill, and Ethan Brady Smith; great grandchildren, Ava Rian Strawser, Tatum Charles Strawser, Olivia Louise Wolfe, Isaac Thurman Smith, and Rosalyn Marie Wolfe and Minnie Rae Hill. 

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, February 22nd at the Oliver-Cheek Funeral Home, 420 W. Main St. Ashville where a Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 23rd with Pastor Ty Myers officiating. Interment will follow in Reber Hill Cemetery, Ashville.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Emmanual UMC, 1015 Georgia Rd.
