Carl Leopold Obituary

Carl Thomas Leopold was born on September 20, 1939 and he passed to Heaven on May 3, 2023. He was born in Newport, Kentucky to Audrey Leopold (nee Beckman) and Carl Leopold and he is survived by his brothers Larry (Peggy), Robert Vogel (Bonnie) and his sister Joy Quedens (Eric). Carl is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara (Welsh) Leopold and they built a loving family with their two children Laura Whitaker (Bob) and Joseph Leopold (Carrie). The sparkle in his life came from his grandchildren Macy, Emily and Claire Whitaker and Mina and Benjamin Leopold and being their Papaw was his favorite fulltime job. Whether it was taking them too far out in the ocean for Barb’s comfort while on family vacations, chasing runaway umbrellas, “teaching” the kids how to golf, taking them for rides in Lolly the Trolley, helping with math homework or attending their countless softball and baseball games, track meets, choir concerts and horse shows, Carl was always willing to share his views on what was going on! He enjoyed watching Ohio State football and sharing his thoughts about the games with his buddies “The Fab 4” after their rounds of golf during time spent at the “19th hole”.  Carl was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served as an interpreter before graduating from the University of Cincinnati and The Ohio State University.  He worked for the Battelle Corporation in Columbus, Ohio and Bangkok, Thailand before finally landing in the career he was made for, banking. He worked for Irwin Union Bank in Indiana and eventually retired from First Merit Bank in Akron, Ohio where he was a Trust Investment Officer. A private family service will take place in Ashville, Ohio. The arrangements are being handled by the Oliver-Cheek Funeral Home and interment will be in Reber Hill Cemetery.  Carl’s memory will live on in the laughter of his family at the many stories they will tell future generations of Leopolds and Whitakers. If you would like to honor his memory with a donation, the family requests that you consider Crossroads Hospice at crhcf.org or the Alzheimer's Association at act.alz.org .  Online condolences at olivercheekfuneralhome.com
