Karole DeMond Obituary

Karole Elaine DeMond, age 72, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2024, in Columbus, OH, at Kobacker House. Surrounded by loved ones in her final days, Karole transitioned with a sense of peace and serenity.

Born on September 22, 1951, in Columbus, OH, Karole attended Gahanna Lincoln High School as part of the class of 1969. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker, infusing warmth and coziness into her homes, creating an inviting atmosphere that became a haven for family gatherings, joyous parties, and pool hangouts. Karole had a unique ability to make everyone feel like family, earning her the title of a second mom to many.

Professionally, Karole was a skilled Photofinisher. She played a pivotal role in co-founding Capital Photo in Columbus, OH, alongside her husband Brent, where her business acumen and dedication helped the company thrive. Additionally, Karole started a business growing heirloom tomato plants and tomatoes, which she sold at the Clintonville Farmer’s Market, Pearl Alley Farmer’s Market, and to chefs around Columbus. Many at the farmers market affectionately knew her as “The Tomato Lady.”

Karole had a deep passion for interior decorating, landscaping, vegetable gardening, and traveling. She explored the cultures of Cuba, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Costa Rica, and Mexico. Cozumel, Mexico, held a special place in her heart, where she enjoyed the sun, sand, and waves, snorkeling, scuba diving, collecting seashells. She cherished moments with family and friends at their favorite retreat, The Condumel.

Boating was another beloved hobby, and Karole, along with family and friends, spent weekends on Lake Erie. They embarked on memorable journeys, boating up and down the East coast from the Great Lakes to Key West.

Karole's love for antique collecting was more than a hobby; it was a celebration of beautiful things and a connection to the past. Her frequent discoveries at Scott's Antique Market reflected her appreciation for the artistry and stories behind each piece.

Karole is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Brent, daughters Michelle DeMond-Axelrod (Jon DeMond-Axelrod) and Kim DeMond (Josh Circelli) as well as her cherished grandchildren: Julian (17), Scarlett (14), Mikie (11), Joey (7), Lyle (7), and Zoe (5). Karole is also survived by her sisters Marilyn “Bumbie” Birkman (Paul Birkman) and Jennifer Conrad, brother Matt Conrad (Stacey Conrad), niece Ashlee Beard, nephew Ryan Fleming, and cousin (affectionately known as sister) Dianne Stickel (Rick Stickel). She was preceded in death by her dear brother Steven Conrad, nephew Pat Conrad, and her parents Harry E. Conrad and Dorothy (Garrison) Conrad.

Karole's family will be hosting a Celebration of Life in the Spring, details to be announced. In lieu of flowers, they encourage donations to Kobacker House, who provided compassionate end-of-life care for Karole. Additionally, the family suggests honoring Karole's memory by planting heirloom tomatoes this spring and sharing the bounty with friends and family, as Karole always did.
